PlayStation Beta Rooms. What Happened.

Playstation Beta Rooms is the latest showcasing event by Sony. It marks their new intentions of bringing events to a wider audience. Held in the extremely attractive Custard Factory in Birmingham’s Digbeth area, the event showcased numerous titles, from the genuinely surprising Playstation Move to the awe-inducing Motorstorm. More Beta Rooms are scheduled later throughout the year, even making an appearance at Eurogamer Expo 2010. Here’s what occurred…

Killzone 3

The event also showed off Guerilla games sci-fi epic Killzone 3. Its gore soaked visuals and sprawling mountain top vistas were all the more glorious in 3D. 3D which by the way is a game changer, it’s considerate and modest, not overpowering aneurism inducing stuff. As opposed to shrapnel and guts flying into your face, it flies past your face; a surprisingly big difference. The range of depth is also vastly increased, something which first person shooters benefit from greatly.

This level had you reprise the role of Sev, teamed with the grating hard-as-nails Rico. You are tasked with infiltrating a Helghast base. Set in some distant snowy mountains, it’s a refreshing setting, a break from the cities and deserts of its predecessor.

Although in the pre-alpha stage of development this particular level was extremely well polished, with vast improvements been made on its prior instalments. Most notably the removal of the sluggish character movement; the bane of KZ2. Movement is far more natural, it’s easier to aim and easier to kill, although the iron sites are still by default relegated to R3; annoyingly. Soaring into this instalment are jet packs. Not flimsy backpack look-a-likes but massive winged things that give the already dangerous Helghast a lethal edge. Don’t go thinking that those flying machines are Helghast-centric, Sev takes control of the devices at certain points. During these platforming pieces you become the death from above, it’s a nice break from the monotony and quite frankly adds heaps to the game.

With visceral and heated 3D action, Killzone 3 remains one to look forward to, Beta Rooms definitely gave a worthy taster. February 2011 cannot come fast enough.

Playstation Move

Move represents Sony’s march on the casual market. Much like the Nintendo Wii, it places two separate controllers in each hand, only here the Eyetoy grants a third input making the Move system incredibly responsive. A title called Sports Champions showed just how accurate and responsive it can be. The only portion of the game available to play was table tennis. All that was required was a quick calibration, a standard effort of: arms by the side, by the shoulder and finally by your belt buckle. My actions and the actions of the on-screen paddle were mirror perfect and at no time did any fault occur. In this particular game, Move was perfect.

Then there were other titles making use of Move. Kung Fu Rider was one of them. As fun as the game was it had its woes. The game sees you riding around various urban tracks on all kinds of crazy vehicles, most notably, an office chair. Score is based on you collecting cash dotted along the track, it’s extremely fun, yet clearly has no lasting appeal. However asking me to “gently wave the controller up and down to move forward” when playing a game that is the epitome of crazy, is unwise. Other actions included: jerking the controller up to jump, sideways to drift and leaning either way to turn. Asking me to “gently” do anything when under such frenzy seems counter intuitive, and highlights a weakness of Move, or at least in this case, Kung Fu Rider.

Playstation Move: The Fight also shined a light on the troubles Move will potentially face. Set in the gritty world of underground fighting dual Move controllers become your fists as you square up to some mean looking, and perfectly done characters. It is important to stress that this was still a pre-alpha version and the game very much reflected this.

It felt that the game was trying to push me to do certain actions, my quick jab to the gut, turned into the games idea of a destructive haymaker. Which didn’t work anyway because I didn’t put enough power in the shot. A shot I didn’t want to pull off in the first place. Sports Champions was proof positive that Move has the ability to 100% reflect your actions, The Fight is proof that if developers don’t do a job properly, Move suffers as a consequence. A more than capable peripheral.

Heavy Rain with Playstation Move

Heavy Rain released in February this year surrounded by buzz. Its tale of kidnap and mystery set to redefine videogame storytelling giving adult games a rebirth, and launched the title into critical acclaim. Its complex controls also wanted to change the way we play games, it didn’t, but at least it had good intentions. Much to the disappointment of fans Move support is arriving at the expense of any other DLC.

That’s not to say Heavy Rain is dead. The segment I played was very well done, in fact, it showed great promise. It’s one of the greatest parts of the game, you feel genuine fear for the characters life; the home invasion level.

This is where things got annoying, even with a tutorial the game had one massive flaw. A flaw that is still a problem for many Wii titles. It’s all well and good telling me I’ve gone wrong, but you have to tell me what exactly I did which was wrong. With something as accurate as Move, you have to go into specificities. So aside from the odd command that I couldn’t pull off, the combination of a game so in depth its creator called it a movie and a device so accurate and responsive it places you on the game is very deadly.

Motorstorm Apocalypse & Gran Turismo 5

Possibly the most anticipated racer of this decade is released November of this year. Gran Turismo 5 is set to be the definitive racer, making full use of the powerful PS3 system. I have to say it’s one of the most beautiful games I’ve ever played, both cars and tracks were perfect. Handling was almost flaw-free although I have a feeling traction control was turned off at some points making it very hard to control. The segment playable was only a tiny snippet but to be fair, it showed a great deal of promise.

It’s a great shame there was not more to see with regards to GT, I would’ve liked to see some multiplayer and the customization was very limited; just a few tracks and cars were available.

GT also happened to be shown in 3D, whilst I didn’t get to play it in 3D I did spend some time watching. Although it’s early code there were a lot of texture pop issues in the 3D version; a great many in fact. Apparently rendering the game unplayable. While I’m sure this won’t be an issue in the final build, it was painfully prevalent in this version.

Another eagerly anticipated racer on show at the event was Motorstorm Apocalypse, the latest in the series by Evolution Studios. Set in an unnamed city, the game has you race as the world literally crumbles around you. Tracks shift and change as the environment has it’s impact.

From the vehicles on show it looked fairly similar to the earlier incarnations although graphics had been improved and handling tweaked. Gameplay remained essentially the same, you’re pitted against a host of other drivers and vehicles in dynamic and beautiful environments.

There’s a lot to be said for trying to outrun a hulking building as it starts to fall towards you; this game says it all. When paired with a 50 inch T.V the experience was truly amazing, one that you won’t want to miss.

Little Big Planet 2

The much loved Little Big Planet made a bounding return at Beta Rooms. Although little has been said about the title it was obvious that the game features far more customization, especially clothing for your Sack Boy, from a strawberry head to a conical flask outfit.

In the level demoed each character came with a whip that could latch on to various things. Whilst only a small detail it added so much fun to the game, allowing me to save my partner in certain situations. There’s not a lot to say on Little Big Planet, there wasn’t much to see. I can assure it’s well in it’s way to becoming a fully fledged title. Surpassing the first in terms of everything.

Bioshock 2 DLC 'The Protector Trials'

The third piece of DLC for Bioshock 2 has now been released and focuses entirely on single player content.

According to 2K, it leans towards fast paced gameplay, and you need to be a master of plasmids and weapons as well as have a good strategy to succeed.

It costs 400 points on XBL and $4.99 on PSN.

Metro 2033 finally gets some DLC

Metro 2033 came out on the Xbox 360 and PC in March this year, but is only now getting some downloadable goodies, and not a substantial amount, either.

The game's developer, 4A Games, have announced the Ranger Pack, available August 3rd on Xbox Live and Steam.

The DLC contains all they usual suspects like new achievements worth an extra 250G, new weapons, and the new Ranger Mode: - In standard Ranger Mode, ammo is dramatically reduced and all weapons cause more damage. Your foes are deadlier than ever – but so are you! - so says the blurb on their website. Another mode, Ranger Hardcore add's another sting in the tail of the player, as it totally removies the HUD, making it harder to judge your health and whereabouts.

Download the pack Aug 3rd on Xbox Live for 240 points, and on Steam for the princely sum, of nothing.

Sony confirms gamescon press conference for Aug 17

Mark your calanders or put the date in that fluffy pink diary of yours - you know, the one with the lock.

Sony have confirmed their press conference at this years Gamescon event in Cologne, will be held on August 17, which smacks on a Tuesday.

The event kicks off at 6pm CET, that's 5pm British.

They've also announced the first bunch of games which will be at the Germany show, presumably in playable form on the show floor:

  • Killzone 3
  • Gran Turismo 5
  • inFamous 2
  • LittleBigPlanet 2
  • DC Universe Online
  • Journey
  • Motorstorm: Apocalypse
  • Sorcery
So get your guesswork in now as to what Sony may or may not announce at the presser. PSP 2? Some news on Agent? PlayStation Network stuff? Personally I'm going for all of those, plus time travel device. Remember it was at the 2009 event that Sony unveiled the much anticipated slimmer PS3, so its always one to watch out for.

So far there's no word if Microsoft will also make a significant appearence at the show, but it has been confirmed that Fat Face have totally run out of LED equipped Poncho's, so its a possibility.

Alan Wake DLC now out

The first piece of DLC for Alan Wake, 'The Signal' is now out on the Xbox Marketplace.

If you bought the collectors edition, there is a code inside the box to get it for free, if not then it will set you back 560 points.

If they put the effort into 'The Signal' as they did the full game, it will definitely be worth the points.  Go get it now guys!

Microsoft pull 1 vs 100 - free swag lovers shed a tear

Microsoft has confirmed that the multiplayer quiz 1 vs 100 will not be returning to Xbox Live, and subsequently there will not be a 3rd season.

When we started on this journey, we knew we were creating an entirely new genre of entertainment that would be a continually evolving concept," said Dave McCarthy, Microsoft Game Studios, General Manager. "We're very proud of the ‘1 vs 100' team and their accomplishments, and are excited to apply what we've learned to future programming."

Apparently the team behind 1 vs 100 are working on future content for Xbox Live using the skills learned from the game.

Thanks, Kotaku.

Podcast No. 4

In this podcast we don't really have much to talk about and we have our most random question yet from the community.

GTA Vice City oddly rated by Aussie ratings board [UPDATE]

UPDATE: According to VG247, Rockstar has confirmed the listing was related to the PC version of the game, and nothing to do with a re-release. Apparently, they just re rated the game for record purposes. We haz said face.

Original story:

Strange things are strange.

The OFLC, Australia's ratings board has given Grand Theft Auto: Vice City a 15+ rating, eight years after its release on PS2.

The listing, which you can see below, describes the game as 'Modified', which leads us to believe its not just a carbon re-hash of, quite frankly, one of the greatest games of all time.

Sony have recently asked the PlayStation community which classic PS2 games they would like to see beefed up in HD with Trophies and all the other modern jazz, with Vice City being a big contender. Is this it? Or is it going to be a PSN/XBLA deal instead? Or maybe, just maybe, are we starting to see some GTA V movement? Stay tuned for more.

inFamous 2 gameplay trailer makes us happy

Not much to say about this, really. You just have to see it for yourself, alright? I promise you'll like it.

Announced just before E3, the Sucker Punch sequel is out in 2011 on PlayStation 3.

Landit Bandit Review

You can tell a mile away when a team of developers have a love for gaming. It’s clear that Sweden-based developers Bearded Lady Consulting have put a great deal of love into their latest effort; Landit Bandit.

The game is a slice of classic arcade goodness. Taking homage from games like Crazy Taxi and Lunar Lander. It’s simple yet incredibly fun. A fresh break from all the ‘hardcore games’ saturating the market. It’s a well priced and well polished title. A rarity these days.

You’re tasked with flying a home-made helicopter around various island paradises performing tasks along the way. Like ferrying people to a bar whilst keeping the rum flowing by picking up barrels. All the while avoiding environmental threats like jumping sharks and rising water levels. It’s standard arcade stuff; but you love it really.

Keeping with the arcade theme, there is of course, the staple power-ups. Dotted around the levels are vials that add to your boost and cogs that let you instantly repair your damaged chopper. Also, different characters act as add-ons, each having different powers. One has the ability to grapple metal loops to gain speed and another can summon ballast bags which instantly force the chopper down. For an arcade title there’s an insane amount of diversity. That diversity isn’t limited to gameplay as each level has a unique twist. There’s a level with ice where you slip and slide about making it harder to control the chopper. I especially liked the level which is wholly 2D, playing like a side-scroller. This uniqueness is a sure sign of a well developed game.

It’s bright and vivid, the setting is extremely beautiful. From half sunken ships to mountains, there’s plenty of set-pieces to keep the originality going. Each level is also quite different, island peninsulas and mountain cities all keep the flow going. You won’t get bored. The characters and story are also very well thought out. There’s a beautiful island babe, a bearded explorer even a gangster penguin. The story is whacky and to be honest is secondary to the arcade gameplay.

Multiplayer aspects of the game include a ‘Duel’ mode where you square off against another opponent and single player leaderboards. It doesn’t really add anything, then again; it isn’t detrimental. It’s nice to see what scores other people get, but that’s about it.

A big let down was the lack of cut scenes, what semblance of story there is, is told through a comic strip. Whilst the animation is top class. A few cut scenes wouldn’t go a miss. Especially when the game is this good looking. Another small factor is the tricky controls, the helicopter is somewhat hard to control, it’s only really noticeable in the tighter spaces, but it will annoy you. More so in the challenges when you’re timed. However, these a are two bitter drops in an ocean of great content. It will not hinder your enjoyment so much that you’re put off the game.

If you’re a fan of classic arcade action then I highly recommend this game. It’s such a well-rounded title, perfectly formed so that you’re hooked. A small title which packs a powerful punch, by all means buy it.

Naughty Bear Review

Naughty Bear had great promise. People grew excited over a cartoon Hitman, as did I. It failed on that front and although it pains me to say it, it didn’t really succeed on many other fronts either. You can tell 505 Games have but a lot of thought into Naughty Bear, not that thought counts for much.

The presentation of this game is original and pretty, from the colourful menus to the genuinely nice box art. Even the marketing campaign surrounding the game was excellent, superior to a lot of higher-end titles that are released. It’s safe to say no amount of polished presentation can make up for a fairly woeful game.

You play as Naughty, an outcast bear who is persuaded by the narrator to slaughter the rest of the islands bear inhabitants. That’s pretty much the breadth of the story. Actually, that’s a generous description of the story.

The rampage starts out at a party then progresses through five more levels, each getting more difficult. The level design isn’t great, but there’s no getting lost. Then again there’s nothing that stands out: trees, houses and a few other tiny features dominate the levels. There’s practically no variety. Which is a great shame as what is there is very nice to look at. Not that you’ll notice much, as the games crippling gameplay will hold your full attention.

The idea of the game is to kill the bears in the most interesting ways possible. More points are rewarded depending on how you kill a bear or how scared they get. For example, maximum points are achieved if you drive a bear so insane that they kill themselves. Laying traps, sabotaging escape routes and a few other ‘naughty’ things can also boost your score but this will get old, fast.

The way you unlock levels is also frustrating, you must unlock a certain amount of in-game trophies before you can move on. This game is its own worst enemy. Each chapter is separated into five small levels which are all essentially the same. On some you may be timed or have the restriction of not being able to harm a bear. You’re playing an average game as it is, taking away the best parts is a very bad idea.

Multiplayer is basic, it’s fun enough, but there’s no lasting enjoyment whatsoever. It was clearly placed in the game for its own sake. Gameplay types are all standard efforts like deathmatch. That’s all the mention the multiplayer’s worth. It will leech all hope you have for the game.

However, there’s one aspect in which I feel Naughty Bear is very deserving; the cut scenes. They are some of the most amusing I have seen in a long time. They are short skits that precede every level. Whether it be Naughty vs. Ninjas or him killing a fellow bear by toilet. They are extremely well done. The narrator of the game is also rather amusing his outbursts of “Total defluffication” and “Nasty!” all make you raise a smile once in a while; if only for a second.

Naughty Bear, like many games, had promise but failed to deliver; at all. It’s fun for a while but ages too fast, even for the brief moment you’re interested; there’s not a great deal going for it. If you’re into arcade style point scoring and cartoon violence then this is perfect for you. If you're not in that incredibly small niche, leave this well alone; for your sake.
