Game Attic Awards - You Decide

Here at Game Attic, we look at rewarding games that are particularly awarding in fields that other award-awarders don't find particularly awarding enough to award an award in their awards.

Therefore, please find below, the awards ceremony (it's just a list really, no fancy fake plastic awards or nothing) for what we feel are deserving contributions to the gaming industry that mostly go unnoticed.

What we'd like from you, are your nominations for the below categories. From the results, we'll total them up and reveal your winners.

We'll include a list of the main games from the past 12months as a reminder below. To get your nominations in, just list the game that you think deserves to win in the order the categories are listed in below. You can either enter via email (GoTY@gameattic.co.uk) or via the comment form below.

The BAVGAs

Well, what can I say? It was a great night, and I'm glad I had the privilege of being backstage with the press. However, the night didn't start off to great, but that was my own fault, then it quickly got better and better.

I arrived at the venue around 7.15, didn't know where I was going, so I asked one of the organisers there where I needed to go, and the pointed me to the direction of a desk.  I casually and happily wandered over and said who I was, they then looked on their list and couldn't find me on it (I started getting scared) then they asked if I was a nominee or for press, so I told them I was press and was there for the media centre.  They then kindly showed me where I should have gone. Panic Over.

I went into the Media Centre (the room for all the press invited). There was only a few other people in there at this point, including MrPointyHead and SuperKaylo, which seemed quite weird to me.

I didn't really know what to do with myself, so I went and sat at a table and just started jotting down some notes in my pad.  Luckily though, after only a couple of minutes someone that I knew I could go and talk to came through the door.  It was my friends cousin, James Batchelor, who works over at MCV.

We were then joined by Iain McKenzie who works for BBC Radio 1s Newsbeat.  I'd listened to him a few times on the radio before, and it was really weird for me that he just came and sat with us.  I found out he was addicted to twitter just like me, and we started talking about everything gaming related.

While we were talking, there was a few groups setting up their cameras and equipment ready to interview the winners and celebs.

Then the awards began.

Everyone got up and surrounded the screen that was in the room to watch the awards being carried out.

The first few awards had been given out and everyone agreed with them, then the 'Use of Online' award was being announced and FIFA won, that's when there was a real state of shock in the room, with everyone asking "How the hell did that win?".

The winners then started coming into the room, as well as some of the presenters.

One thing which I quickly realised is that if you didn't apply to be filming anything and have a crew with you, it was impossible to get any type of interview or even just a photo.

Anyway, the celebs and the winners were entering the room, quickly getting moved to the interview area, each of them doing an interview for the 7 or 8 crews that were there for a couple of minutes each. While this was happening, I was just trying my best to act cool and not have a meltdown of excitement in the middle of the room, which I think I did pretty well.

Then the fellowship was announced and Shigeru Miyamoto started his acceptance speech and you could tell who was excited to see him with his speech, as when he started his speech they all got as close to the screen and speakers as they could get.

Then, unfortunately, the awards ended and everyone was wrapping up whatever it was they were getting on with.  As I found my way out there was a lot of nominees/winners/celebs hanging around in the hall way, but I carried on acting as normal as I could and left.

It was a great night, not what I was expecting it to be like, but still great, and something I won't forget about in a long time.

I feel very privileged that I got the chance to go to the event, as I didn't really think I would ever be able to get to go to anything like this.  That's why I'm going to finish this feature with a big 'thank you' to Marty, if it wasn't for him then this wouldn't have happened, so Marty, thank you.

Age Ratings and Bannings

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) are the ratings system for Films and Video in the UK. The British Board of Film Classification is an independent, non-governmental body, which has classified cinema films since it was set up in 1912 and videos since the passing of the Video Recordings Act in 1984.

BBFC also do digital games but on June 16, 2009, it was declared by the UK's Department of Culture, Media and Sport that PEGI would be the sole classification system for videogames and software in the UK.

PEGI and BBFC have different age ratings for games.

You can notice the difference between the ratings straight away. PEGI has gone for a 16 rating and chosen to use the ages 3 and 7 instead of U and PG. The 12a and R18 Rating aren’t used when rating games by the BBFC.

There has been lots of controversy about games being banned and some games ratings. For example, Manhunt was released on November 18, 2003 but was taken off shelves in certain stores, GAME being the major one. This was all down to someone murdering another person and then blaming it on the game.
This game does have gruesome scenes of violence and murder but blaming video games is just a scape goat people try and use. I would also think that children who do try and murder someone after playing a game must have had mental instabilities, or some mental health issues. It was never banned in the UK or in North America but in other countries such as New Zealand and Australia, it was banned.

Why is the rating system there?

Age ratings are used to ensure that content in, films, videos, DVDs and Video Games, are not purchased by the wrong audience. Age Ratings are more aimed at parents to provide guidance on whether to buy that product or not.

Video games are played by millions of people and in the last 10 years have seen a massive increase of users. Just recently, one of the most popular games, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 hit over 25 million active players over all platforms. That is a massive number considering only 37% of the UK Population call themselves “active gamers”. 49% of games are 3+ or U, that is a massive amount and only 4% are for only 18+. This shows even with the small amount of games that are 18+ we still need a rating system.

The rating system shows who the game is suitable for. For example, PEGI 7 games are only suitable for people ages 7 and above. Where as a PEGI 18 game is only suitable for people ages 18 and above. Unfortunately, some parents don’t look at the ratings or simply don’t care, they will buy the child the game regardless of the warnings and age rating. Parents try and blame the Games Industry far too fast nowadays and this angers a lot of people. It is the parent’s responsibility to choose what their child plays not the game industry or PEGI.

Recently, on the Alan Titchmarsh Show, there was a discussion about video games and the violence involved in some games. There were 3 guests involved in the discussion. CVG Editor Tim Ingham, Actress Julie Peasgood and Former Editor of the Sun Kelvin McKenzie. For some reason, Julie seemed to think games “promote racism” and "cause low self-esteem and depression". I think these a both bold statements, especially the racism one. I have never played a game which has had anything which promotes racism. They seemed to try and talk down CVG Editor Tim Ingham even though he was putting forward a strong argument. This shows how ill informed some people can be about the games industry and rating system. Alan said that games are easy to get hold even with the system and cinemas have the rating system which stops kids getting in. One thing wrong there though is, what’s to stop these kids buying the DVD of the film when it becomes available?

Legal Issues

Since PEGI is a voluntary system it runs in conjunction with, and is subordinate to, existing national laws, whether they prohibit certain content or establish mandatory rating systems. The Legal Committee’s role is to advise ISFE of any changes to national legislation within participating countries that could have an impact on the voluntary age rating system.
The PEGI System is based on a Code of Conduct - a set of rules to which every publisher using the PEGI system is contractually committed. The Code deals with the age labelling, promotion and advertising of interactive products and reflects the interactive software industry’s commitment to provide information to the public in a responsible manner. In order to fulfil these objectives a number of boards and committees have been created.

Ethical Issues

Do you think it is ok that games with massive violence can get to children? I do not like it one bit. It's all down to parents once again, they supply the games to their children and therefore they have access to massive amounts of violence in one piece of Media. Some parents would argue, that they can do what they please and that they know their children. This in a sense is true but once again, if we all followed this stance we wouldn't need the rating system. Kids have killed and then blamed video games and then the parents have blamed the industry. No, bad parents. It's your fault.

As in life, there are ethical issues in games as well. One of the big ones being the Fable Series. One of the games tag line for a while was, “Good or Evil?”
This plays a big part in the game and you have to make decisions in game as you would in real life. For example, shooting a man or letting him live? This is not a situation we face in real life everyday. We would normally have a situation like, Helping an old lady across the road or leaving her and crossing anyway. Studies have been carried out with games like this to see if affects people and if they act the same in game as they do in real life.

A big issue which a lot of people were talking about when it first surfaced was the No Russian level from the game Modern Warfare 2. This level had you exiting from an elevator in an airport with 4 other people and opening fire on innocent civilians. This is the reason Modern Warfare 2 got it’s 18 Rating, the first time in the history of Call of Duty to receive an 18 rating. Lots of people complained about this level but Infinity Ward, the games developer, did include a “SKIP LEVEL” option. They did this knowing that not everyone would want to play this level and that it might traumatise certain people. They made sure it wouldn’t affect the games ending or rewards that the player would receive.

Conclusion

Ratings on games and films are there for a reason, to protect the consumer. There is not much the game/film industry can do if the parents choose to go against the ratings and give their children adult games/films. The industries will always be blamed, the games one especially. They receive lots of complaints everyday and the news seems to report on it and make it look like it’s their fault when it’s not. They get the rating on their and then ship the game out. If it’s for adults then fine, if it’s for children fine. Don’t blame the games industry. Banning games over here is very rare; I don’t think there has been one for many years now. Way I see it, the parents will continue to buy their children whatever games they want until there is a better system introduced to stop people under 18 getting their hands on these adult games. I don’t have any ideas what could possibly help this problem, new rating system wouldn’t help and parental locks on the games consoles themselves already exist but blantly aren’t used. I just hope that the games industry doesn’t receive a knocking blow in the years to come due to his problem.

Digital Downloads or Physical Copy?

In these times, when everyone seems to download all their music and all sorts of bits and pieces, and people seem to be talking about games heading that way, the question is: do you really want to be downloading your games in the future, or do you want to carry on buying the physical copy?

This is already starting to happen with the 'Games on Demand' service and all the games on the XBLA, and the same types of services over on the PSN.  These services obviously aren't doing too bad, but this could just be because most of the games on them aren't easily found in-store, and it's easier for people to just fire up their console and download it.  However, it's expected in the future that new releases are going to be up for download on release day. So, what are the gamers going to do? Not bother going down their local games shop, or just download it straight onto their consoles hard drive?

Call me old fashioned but I prefer going out and buying my game on a disc, that way I can take it to a mates easily for a game night, they could also borrow it if they want, and also you can go trade it in if you really wanted to. Whereas, a download, you can't take anywhere or trade it in/get your money back if you decide you don't want it any longer.

However, I also appreciate that downloads could be better as that way you can't lose it, and if somehow you do accidentally delete it from your hard drive, you can re-download it, although with a disc, if you lose it or break it in anyway, then you can't just get a replacement, instead, you have to buy it all over again.  Also, if something is installed to the hard drive it could be quicker loading that if it was being read from of the disk, and lets be honest it's much easier to just start a download than have to go into town and buy it.

But, as I said, I prefer buying a disc rather than downloading a game, although I will download it if it's the only way I can get it, as there is no alternative.  I just think there is nothing better than unwrapping the cellophane, I always get a good feeling once I've taken that off and opened the case and then (*TA DA*) you see the disc for the first time.

Overall, I can see that both have their advantages and disadvantages, but for me you can't beat going and buying the physical copy. Will others agree with me? Who knows. We will just have to wait and see how big the downloadable games become.

DLC: Good or Bad?

I'm sure most people these days are aware of DLC, and what it is all about. However, a new study that surveyed 800 gamers, showed that 43% of those asked had no idea DLC even existed. This came to a surprise to me, as I figured all gamers that are hooked up to any online network would have at least a vague idea of DLC.

Other figures showed only 15% of those had actually purchased DLC and 41% said they were aware, but had never purchased any DLC.

This got me thinking, how big really is DLC for gaming and is it really needed?

Now we all know that the game companies all say that they have got x amount of money from DLC, but if this survey is an accurate representation of the bigger picture, surely the amount could be much higher if they marketed DLC better, so more gamers would buy/know about DLC.

This would then mean that the cost to make the DLC would rise, and therefore the DLC itself would rise in price, creating a vicious circle.

The main reason that I feel DLC can be bad, is because developers could be cutting short what they put on the disc and release content, which could be in the game in the first place, as DLC. This then means gamers are out of pocket.

Shouldn't developers just put everything into the game in the first place? That way gamers can feel happy and satisfied in the knowing that the game has got all the features, all the levels, all the characters in it already, and they don't need to worry about paying out for the game and the DLC.

Don't get me started on companies that announce DLC before the game is even released! That is just ridiculous.

Obviously if used right DLC can be good. It can keep the game from getting boring and stale. I just feel that some developers/publishers are abusing DLC.

What's the wider picture on it though? What do you guys think?

So Whats Up With The Modern Warfare 2 DLC?

Ok so for those of you who didn't read m
y previous article I wrote about the fact that Xbox 360 was getting a timed release of the new expansion DLC. Now back at E3 last year during Microsofts Keynote we were promised 2 Map Packs, am I the only one who remembers this? So what happened? Is it now 1 map pack and one expansion pack, or do we still have two map packs coming out and an expansion pack as well because Infinity Wards just feeling that nice. Come on we need some clarity!!! I mean I don't mind if its the later but i would be pretty peeved if Infinity Ward is skipping out on there promise of 2 map packs oh and also it better be 4 maps not 3 maps like the MW map pack. If Treyarch can release 4 maps in a map pack, even if one of them is a Nazi Zombie map for 800 MS points then so can you infinity ward.

Going back to the subject of the expansion DLC what could it be? Is it just more Spec-Ops missions or is it the rumored Ghost prologue which was teased on launch day. When interviewed Craig Fairbrass the voice actor for ghost said that,

"I did in the last game a voice for a character called Gaz and in this game I'm now voicing a guy called Ghost, who now just got a spin-off comic of his own and they're talking about another little game to go with it. So, I'm quite excited about it. It's grown and grown and grown."

If its the Ghost prologue it better prove that hes Gaz otherwise why the heck did Infinty Ward use the same voice actor then. Its not like theres a sudden lack of voice acting talent, though you wouldn't have known it from looking at Billy Murray's(Captain Price's) current work, since the only thing he is doing now is the horrible Lawyers4you adverts. Yes everybody, the people in those adverts aren't really lawyers a bit slow are we? Or it might turn into some ridiculous soap drama (get it lol Soap hehehe) and Ghost is really Gaz's conjoined twin who was separated at birth. Who now wears the incredibly awesome skull mask in memory of Gaz for some unknown and probably incredibly ridiculous reason. Make up your own reason!!! Im not doing all the work here thinking up bizarre plots. *Spoiler Alert* If thats true who cares they are both dead anyway *End of Spoiler Alert*

In the end I guess all that matters is that Xbox 360 is getting it first and Sony fanboys can go cry in a corner. Then the fanboys will probably just retort well Microsoft payed them so you could get it, well one who really cares and two that just means Microsoft understands the power of money.

Are MMORPGs really a waste of time?

MMORPGS, millions of people play them and why? There are goals on there that people try and reach just like real life.

Example:
Real Life – Further your career
VR Life – Reach a new level

Real Life – Get a new car
VR Life – New epic weapon

The main reason we play them is because it’s another life you can escape to whenever you please. The biggest MMORPG of course is World of Warcraft and some of the servers include RP (Role-playing) and I have played on one of them and I must say some of the people on there take it the whole way, all the way up to WoW Marriage.

People dedicate their life’s to games like WoW, I myself play WoW and for some a few months I will be very much addicted to it but I then find myself pulling away from it and I shut down my account for a couple months before going back. There are legends in the game for example, one player completed the game without using any weapons only his fists and he was called a legend for doing this. If I joined the Army and went to War without using a weapon I would not be called a legend I would be called a moron. One of the biggest legends of WoW is Leeroy Jenkins (aka Ben Schulz) He was made famous for running into a room full of enemies without the rest of his team being ready and for shouting out the name of his character, Leeroy Jenkins. Once Blizzard caught light of how popular he was they contacted him and he has appeared at Blizzcon and many other events which relate to WoW.

Sometimes people can take it too far. Tianjin, China- A thirteen-year-old boy played Warcraft for 36 hours straight and then jumped from a building to his death in order "to join the heroes of the game" as indicated by his suicide note. This shows how games can affect peoples mind but I believe people who do kill or commit suicide after playing a game must have some mental instability.

Here is one thing that you should all think about when playing an MMORPG, once you reach the highest level what else is there to do apart starting all over again until the next expansion comes out. I reached 80 the other week on my Death Knight and I got all the gear I needed and now I can’t do anything else until the next expansion comes out until Autumn 2010 which is when the Cataclysm comes out, Blizzard’s new expansion. What did I do? I started a new character, rinse and repeat.

Basically most of us play MMORPGS to take up our spare time which inevitably takes up all our time. Some believe they are a waste of time but if you get joy out of it then I don’t think it is.

UK OXForums countdown the 100 laws for FPS

The Official Xbox Community forums have been getting their creative thinking caps on and have come together to create their own 100 laws for First Person Shooter games. It's just a joke list, but if you really must vent your frustration at a suggestion, you can do so below, enjoy!

Marty

1. Anything red must explode if shot. Barrels are usually best, but crates of gas canisters also do the job.
2. Fixed mounted guns must always face away from any potential flashpoints and be pretty much useless.
3. Never bring a gun to a knife fight. You can unload a full clip of a shotgun into someones chest but if their knife grazes you then you are done for. Stay safe, always carry a knife.
4. Never run into a room that you have just thrown a flashbang into as the grenade only effects you.
5. Venus fly trap. Care packages are the best way to draw out campers, pop one out into open areas and pick people off as they inevitably try to steal it from you, then when they are all dead stoll in and claim your UAV (or ammo crate more often than not).
6. The only thing you can ever rely on your team to do is, give away your position, run into your line of fire and freindlt flash you. [1-6 courtesy of lego pig]
7. No matter how many AI allies you have on the battlefield. All enemys will target you, regardless how far away they are [courtesy of Faz Fhunder]
8. If you place a really good killstreak reward, a team mate will carpet bomb it seconds later.
9. If you can manage to sneak around the back unseen, to where the enemy team are hiding, your mate will carpet bomb you seconds later.
10. Pistols kill in 1 shot, unless you're using it.
11. Invariably, if you're good at a game, you'll be accused of being a glitcher, and pick up negative feedback and bad rep.
12. If you don't see anyone for 7 whole minutes, the second you do, you're dead.[8-12 courtesy of benj4m]
13. You carry a shotgun round in the hopes of close range kills but somehow someone with a sniper will always kill you at close range first.
14. The enemies who attack in 3s will teabag you but the one guy who just shot you through a complex series of debris parts will walk away and not show off how badly he owned you.
15. If someone calls you a poopy head you might aswell throw the game because that little kid will be shooting you in the back all match.
16. If you pick up the sniper or any other power weapon someone on your team will always teamkill you for it then miss with every shot they fire using it.
17. Even if you're drunk you can still get MVP by using a sniper rifle.
18. There will always be one guy claiming he's carrying the team and inevitably he will try to claim anything you do as his own.
19. At some point you will meet a "pro" who will threaten you with legal action for depriving him of his livelyhood because you kicked his ass.
20. The MLG will moan the game isn't balance and insist upon the removal of any weapon that requires some degree of throught to use and turn it into a who shoots first wins luck contest.
21. Someone will always find a glitch somehow because they spend days jumping at buildings to see what happens.
22. The leaderboards will mean nothing within 2 hours of release thanks to people boosting and glitching. [13-22 courtesy of hobblejp]
23. No Scoping makes you ecool.
24. Making a No scoping montage makes you a ethug.
25. You must shout PEW PEW down the mic when firing alien weapons.
26. You must shout IMMA CHARGING MAH LAZER when using a Spartan Laser.
27. If you have Clutch in your name, you are going to be the first blood.
28. If the other team are saying Good game to you after beat them and you hear a slight accent you have to start shouting racial slurs and insults about them and their mothers. If you don't, then your not MLG.
29. MLG is like Christianity. If your not part of it, then your the enemy.[23-29 courtesy of Hoaxs]
30. Premature reloading! [courtesy of R E S P A W 7V]
31. No matter how long you check before hand, the second you pull the pin on that grenade someone will run round the corner and shoot you. [courtesy of Mst Sgt Peppa]
32. When you join a game online you have to abuse anyone who you dont know. [courtesy of MGc iNsTiNcTz]
33. Killing someone with a gamertag xXxXxX PWNZ U NOOBZ sNiPeRZZ xXxXxX is generally very satisfying [courtesy of crabbiT Scot]
34. Having the word "Sniper," or similar, in your tag only to catch a glimpse of said per
son with said tag failing with the sniper or using another weapon is deemed an 'epic fail' offence. [that be my suggestion]
35. Camping is a legitimate strategy - If a player cannot counter this then they should just stop playing as they are obviously terrible at the game [courtesy of iBakez]
36. You always get targeted by predator missiles regardless of team mates all sat bunched together
37. No matter how many bullets you pump into someone, they can keep coming right for you and knife you [36-37 courtesy of R1CH5TER]
38. You might be invisible to radar/UAV, but some jerk n00b with rubbish perks willalways run past you as a predator missile is coming, and it'll wreck you both.
39. If someone is jumping when they kill you, it "doesn't count" and you're not obliged to remember it when telling people how awesome you were later. [38-39 courtesy of benj4m]
40. Whenever you accidentally team kill some one, they must seek revenge and team kill you. [courtesy of GAZLOZ]
41. If someone kills you whilst camping, you must try to kill them as many times as possible, no matter how many times you die in the process. Once you have done this, you must take their camping spot. [courtesy of Broodyhat]
42. When joining a game in progress you will almost always be put on the team that is losing heavily and have to shoot down numerous aircraft that the idiots on your team didn't bother shooting down.
43. When you die it's never your fault. You can and will use any excuse you want, like lag, campers, overpowered weapons, bad teammates etc. etc. [42-43 courtesy of x Despondent]
44. Soldiers often use weapons that are not given to their military. [courtesy of xMP44x Paul]
