No Final Fantasy XIV?

As gamers in the west are hyping up for the much anticipated release of the RPG behemoth that is Final Fantasy XIV, rumours from Japan are starting to spread suggesting that this may be the last of the series. This would come as a shock to most long term gamers, since Final Fantasy has been one of the stalwarts of the industry originating in the early NES days and still going strong today.

All might not be the case however, hints from the CEO and President of Square Enix Yoichi Wada suggest that they could abandon the series for now or possibly take it in a radically new direction. As Wada said that he doesn't think that playing it safe and rushing out to release a sequel is in his companies best interests. He also stated that he didn't want people to think of Square Enix as the company that only made Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, rather as a company that makes high quality games. Whether this is simply paving the way for Square Enix to enter different genres, since their acquisition of Eidos or to the shock and horror of many a Final Fantasy fan the end of the road we will have to wait and see.
