DICE: We don't ever want to charge for maps.

Oh yes. Its just got hotter in the world of multiplayer shooters.

According to CVG, a producer for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 has stated they don't want to charge customers for new maps.

"We don't ever want to charge for our maps and insisted to EA that this attitude was crucial when it came to keeping our community happy and playing together," DICE senior producer Patrick Bach told Xbox World 360 magazine.

This comes a day after the Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus pack was released on Xbox 360, - the DLC that caused a few raised eyebrows due to its higher than average price.

He also added that Bad Company 2 will have "generous" amounts of DLC in the future, although he didn't go any further about what it might be. He also stated: "We're owned by EA but we're still very much DICE." - perhaps a jab at Activision and IW after their 'bust up' during the last month or so, which resulted in the loss of two high profile employees at Infinity Ward.

Here's hoping we'll get some more info on the extra stuff heading to Bad Company 2 in due course. Its apparent though, that they have keeping the community happy on the top of their do to list.

Zeno Clash on XBLA delayed until April

The release date for Zeno Clash: Ultimate Edition has been delayed until April.

"It’s been pushed back a tad," said co-founder Andres Bordeu over on the ACE Team Forums. "Sorry about that to everyone. It should come out early April. Atlus will be releasing more info through one of the next press releases.

Just a little more patience. It’ll be out really soon. As soon as we have new info we’ll post it somewhere here."

The game, which was initially going to be released yesterday, features co-op Tower Challenges and leaderboards, alongside new attacks, weapons, enemies and a game mode. There's still no confirmed price but you can probably expect it to cost 1200 MS Points.

Saints Row 3 will be 'mind-blowing', says THQ

Danny Bilson, Core Games' Vice President, has told CVG that the next installment of Saints Row will be 'mind-blowing.'

"The next Saints Row is mind-blowing. New tech; mind-blowing. I can’t talk about that too much but it’s mind-blowing."

He also said that PR and marketing for it will start to roll out some time this year.

With an expected reveal at E3, the game will hit shelves in 2011 at the latest.

Metro 2033 Review

Featuring one of the most detailed, unique and atmospheric settings since the underwater oasis of Rapture in BioShock, Metro2033 gets its unique feel by being set in a post apocalyptic Metro system set under the now frozen and toxic city streets of Moscow, Russia. The sense, scale and unnerving nature the environment's impact has on you really adds a further dimension to the game's character and gameplay, allowing you to creep and crawl undetected amongst the sewer rats and goolies or the complete opposite, completely tearing it up and cleaning house.

Story

The backstory to the present 2033 situation (put simply) consists of an apocalyptic event that occurred in 2013, annihilating almost all of mankind which coincidentally transformed earth into a poisoned wasteland. Survivors took refuge underground away from the radiation and now (20 years on), any remaining life forms have mutated from their original forms and now rule the surface and the skies above Moscow.

You play as Artyom, born a few days prior to the 'fire' and raised in the sancturary and micro-civilisation that was formed in the Metro links under the city. You are given a message to be delievered to Polis, which starts your adventure leading you away from the sanctuary of the station where you've never left, all the way to highest tower overlooking Moscow.

Gameplay

This is where the game shines amongst the crowd of samey, cliched single player only games. Aside from a few questionable moments where enemy AI runs up to and turns their back to you whilst you furiously pelt them with bullet fire, this game is a fantastic mix of stealth, heart thumping tension and close combat gunfight action.

You can choose to play the game in two completely separate ways: number one is sticking to the shadows, holding and hugging the walls and looking out for traps (broken glass, cans on string or more sinister ones which will kill) and slowly making your way undetected through the Metro world, OR way two, all guns blazing.

My personal preference was to stalk and sneak past anything not human and then take the rebellious enemies (who take the form of Nazi's in this game) out one by one. The benefits of doing so where, well there weren't any really, but it's nice to see a decent mix of ammunition conserving and supply after the original coding and testing received complaints for being too strict on ammo supply.

You are able to carry one weapon in each of the game's 4 weapon classes consisting of: a handgun (normally some non descript, hand crafted/bodged magnum of sorts), an assault rifle (again, hand crafted - like all of the weaponry - to vaguely represent an AK), shotgun, grenades (or throwing knives if Modern Warfare 2 tickled your taste-buds) and a knife. Guns all behave well, it's easy to line up targets, light them up and move along and all the weapons are upgradable if you spend the time searching throughout the game in order to do so.

Due to the new forms of life which have manifested due to the change above ground level (thanks to copius amounts of radiation), the game's 'survival' aspect comes in the form of a gas mask. These require fresh and clean filters in order to stop you choking on the air above ground and once you leave the Metro station's air cleaning facilities so get searching for spares and take cover when in firefights as if you take too much damage to that mask, it will eventually crack and break leaving you, swearing in a smog of choking poison.

All in all, this is a cracking play through, whether it be once or multiple, as the ability to switch style and the inclusion of subconcious decision making determining the final scene's outcome will surely lure you to go through hell once again, to see exactly what Artyom makes of himself.

Graphics

As hinted at earlier on, the environments created within the Metro universe are deep, dark, moody and genuinely chilling. Settings aren't constricted to tunnels (which the name would lead you to believe) but flow between deserted rail exchange stations, deserted and snow covered wastelands (above ground level), demon filled libraries and many more.

All of which present new challenges, tasks and wonderful arrays of detail and scale. The final level sees you replaying the first few minutes of gameplay from when you power the game on, and ultimately reaching a tower. The views upon this and looking out show off the supreme power the 360 is still able to achieve.

There was some slow down when it came to highly detailed and pressurised situations, where lights would flicker, enemies would duck and dive behind cover and gun fire lit up the metro tunnels, but this was infrequent and did not represent the vast majority of the gameplay time. Facial animations are believable, character animations realistic and general behaviour of the human participants in the world where excellent.

Sound

Sound in this game offers the most chills and scares than any graphic or story could possibly throw at you. Whispers, growls, chants, ghostly apparitions and the old favourite of children singing with the sounds of a rusty swing in the background when approaching a radiation pocketed park are all rewardingly creepy as hell.

The use of music is paramount to the experience too, voice overs are of excellent quality and I particularly liked Artyom's readings during loading screens, as if he's reading out entries in a journal or diary which made the already quick loading times seemingly disappear whilst you're distracted listening to him basically talk about him crapping himself, and rightly so.

Words can't really describe a scene to the fullest, where you're quietly creeping with the sound of a demon's breathing echoing in the rooms you're set to discover. The soft breathing through your gas mask coating the environment and a softly playing orchestral score suddenly stops, and your heart momentarily stops along with it. For the remaining few seconds, all that is heard are your foot steps, cracking the broken glass below your feet as your breathing gets deeper and suddenly wham, as the goolie that you were listening to earlier shows his face and starts chasing you like a crazy cat around the bookcases. Absolutely, fantastic.

Summary

What to say, other than this is the greatest introduction to a new environment and situation since BioShock revolutionised the done to death scenario's of old and took the player under the sea with the friendly crustations. Without breaking into song - a'la Little Mermaid - instead of being drowned amongst art deco sunken city scapes, you are left constantly wanting to flee the confines of the metro tubes up until the moment when you actually climb that ladder and see the devestation first hand, where the sanctuary below truly feels like home and secure.

Never has a game had that effect, and even allowing for some questionable moments and slight repetitiveness, this is a fine exclusive that everybody must at least experience during their 360 ownership. Worthy of a fitting sequel and I sure hope they do so, just don't tack on an unnecessary multiplayer like you didn't do this time and it'll work again. Top game, must play.

If we did "4.5", this would get it.

Is this the new Xbox 360 slim?

Ok. We know its nearly April. A time when the internet goes mad with stupid rumors, jokes and all the rest of it. So take this with a pinch of salt.

Dutch website GameKings have a couple of images of what they say is the rumored Xbox 360 slim. The machine is somewhat smaller than the current Xbox 360 and looks very similar to that of the HD-DVD add on (remember the pinch of salt).

The machine is apparently straight out of the box, and only two images are available of the thing so far.
We'll try our best to get some more info on this, but in the meantime check out the site. Google has neatly translated the Dutch for your English reading eyes. Lovely.

MW2 update out

The update needed to play the new Stimulus map pack is now out, and should be available to everyone within a few minutes.

Go get some sugary food and an energy drink ready, and hopefully when you get back the update will be done, and then you can play the new maps all night.

There is no threat for MW2 this year

In a recent interview with CVG, Robert Bowling from Infinity Ward has said that Modern Warfare 2 won't be moved from the top spot of the Xbox Live chart this year.

We all know the contender at the moment is Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and most of us will probably know that there are a few other possible contenders out later this year, such as Medal of Honor and of course the next Call of Duty game.

CVG asked if he thought any game could beat it on the Xbox Live chart, his reply was, "No, I hope not. I certainly don't see any signs of it. We've been number one since launch and this map pack is going to bring even more people to playing MW2 and extend their play time. I don't see it slipping any time soon."

Remember the map pack is out today, for a whopping 1200 points.

There's also a map pack out today for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 for free.

New details on Halo: Reach matchmaking

Bungie have posted a ton of new information on their blog about the upcoming Halo: Reach, including details about matchmaking and other goodies too.

One of the big differences in Reach, will be how differently ranking works from Halo 3. Its been tweaked and improved upon since 3 shipped back in 2007. Thanks to VG247, below is the main bulk of info from the Bungie blog, scaled down.

  • Along with under the hood improvements to netcode, Trueskill, and Matchmaking algorithms, Bungie’s also beefing up the Connection Options and Social Settings. These settings inform players in the matchmaking system who players should team-up with should you have open slots in your party when you go searching in any given playlist.
  • You’ll be matched based on skill alone.
  • Connection options were available in Halo 3, but they’ve now been improved and expanded on and players can now pick and choose from all of the available options. By default the game will always look for the “Fastest” search result, but players can then decide how much importance should be given to things like “Good Connection”, “Language”, and “Skill”. Connection Options can and will have a large impact on matching times.
  • Matchmaking will now take into account your locale and match you up accordingly.
  • Social Settings can be toggled, just like “Connection Options,” the degree to which these factors will influence your matchmaking results are dependent on the specific playlist parameters and it’s important to note that a Social Setting will never override the underlying core matchmaking that takes place.
  • Voting allows you to have greater control over the games and maps you’re playing. Once you’re matched into a squad, the game will provide a default map and game variant, but also provide up to three other alternatives. Majority rules, but if a playlist demands special treatment, we can configure blind or no vote options as well.
  • In the Beta, players will be able to create Saved Films and upload them to their File Shares and create screenshots that can be posted to their gallery on Bungie.net. In Reach, you’ll be able to have thousands of custom content items and you’ll be able to upload, tag, and search for content right from the in game menus.
  • Active Roster is the result of the lobby and Party system getting together with the Friends List, with Player Details getting on the action too.The lobby now displays more than just your own Party. If you have it set to Xbox Live Friends, then it displays your Friends right there in the Roster. You can select them, see what they’re doing, see if there’s room in their Party, and join them. If a couple of Friends are in the same Party, you can see that right there. There’s now less navigating through sub-screens.
  • The DMR and the Magnum can take down a fully shielded Spartan with the exact same number of trigger pulls.
  • Expect significant polish to be liberally applied the aesthetics from now until we ship.

The game is due to ship around September time, although there has been no solid word on that yet. The multiplayer beta is due this spring, with access being given on a priority basis to those with copies of Halo 3: ODST, much like Crackdown did with the Halo 3 beta. Remember those days? Aww, you old softy.

After Burner Climax coming to XBLA in April

Sega will release After Burner Climax on Xbox Live and PSN on April 21 and 22 respectively.
The sequel to the classic arcade and console combat flyer After Burner, will be priced at 800 Microsoft Points or $9.99 on PSN.

Also, check out the trailer and screens below. Looks extremely fun. Think OutRun with Jets. Good stuff.

MW2: Stimulus Map Pack now Live, but broken

Mapathy is over: Activision’s released the first map pack for Modern Warfare 2, known as the Stimulus Package.

The download comes in at just under 330Mb and will set you back 1200 MS points.

The Stimulus DLC includes five new maps: Bailout, Salvage, Storm, and classic maps Crash and Overgrown.

However, various reports all over the net are claiming no one can access the map pack, but that may be down to the fact that the promised patch for it has not released yet.

Nelson’s just tweeted Microsoft is “pushing it out” right now, so you won’t have long to wait, hopefully.

Get the skinny on the release here.

Lost Planet 2 4 player co-op and it looks incredible.

Mass Effect 3 to use Unreal Engine 3

Epics Mark Rain has confirmed that Mass Effect 3 will be utilizing the Unreal Engine 3, just like its predecessors. This news was hardly surprising as Bioware and Epic have had a strong relationship with each other. This is also good news for any fans of the second as you shouldn't be expecting any massive graphical overhauls now.

Speaking to Develop about this, he said that “BioWare chose UE3 for the Mass Effect trilogy because they wanted to make an immersive third-person perspective shooter game with sci-fi environments."

“We have a great working relationship with Epic from both the development and licensee perspective, and we’re continually pleased with how they keep their game engine technology competitive, which helps us deliver the excellent quality games that EA customers expect,” further added EA Partners SVP, David DeMartini.

Mass Effect 3 has already been confirmed to be in production, due to Christina Norman's tweet, earlier this month.

Make sure to check back at Game Attic for more news on ME3 as and when we get it.

Enslaved gets new screenshots

Namco Bandai has released a new batch of screenshots and artwork for 'Enslaved: Odyssey to the West', which is due to come out this autumn.

The upcoming tactical adventure game, developed by Ninja Theory, is loosely based on the ancient Chinese novel 'Journey to the West' but set 150 years into the future. As a brute called 'Monkey', players come across a young woman who relies on you as her only hope for survival of arriving back home safely.

You can find the rest of them over at Destructoid.

Left 4 Dead 2 DLC delayed

The Passing, the first DLC for Left 4 Dead 2, has been pushed back from 'late March' to Spring.

Valve had previously said that 'late March' was the release window for The Passing. However, according to the latest SentUAMessage, we'll now be sitting tight until Spring.

It was also revealed the The Passing will cost 560 Microsoft Points. Still, at least you've now got more time to save up those MS Points.

Imma go cry nao :(

Rumor - Call of Duty: Black Ops the next COD game?

Here we go ladies and gentlemen. According to an article on MapModNews, the next Call of Duty game will be called Call of Duty: Black Ops, and will be released in November this year.

The article was taken from a report by Tek9, and states the Treyarch made game will take place in various times in history from the end of World War II right up to the present day, including missions in Vietnam, Cuba and even the 1980 Iranian embassy siege in London, which involved the SAS.

The Zombie mode from World at War is also said to make an appearance in the game, as well as dedicated servers for the PC, something which will please PC gamers as Modern Warfare 2 lacked this.

This is one hell of a rumor, and must be treated like one until we get some cast iron information. But this would tie in with the expected Cold War setting of the game, and the holiday release. More when and if we get it.

Splinter Cell: Conviction gets leaked launch trailer

Someone is probably going to get their P45 in the morning: the launch trailer for Splinter Cell: Conviction has leaked.

The audio/video isn’t quite synced up, but who cares: it’s Splinter Cell. You should not think about thinking about watching this trailer. It’s even got a bit of Johnny Cash in it too, so just do it.

The game’s due to release on 360 on April 16 in the UK, with a US release on April 13.

The demo is now live on the Marketplace!

Dead Space 2 footage from PAX East

Red Dead Redemption Multiplayer details found in Dutch gaming magazine

Reports are saying that the latest issue of the Gamer.nl Magazine has information on the multiplayer in Red Dead Redemption, which Rockstar has promised to unveil on 5th April.

According to the magazine, the multiplayer will be without lobbies and start out in free-roaming mode instead. Here's an excerpt:-

Red Dead Redemption has an extensive multiplayer mode. Instead of a lobby, it begins with a free-roaming multiplayer mode where players can run freely through the game world. They can form gangs with other players they meet there, and this transition can be computer controlled bandits.

There's also a Gold Rush mode, where it’s every man for himself as players try to collect as many bags of gold as possible. The traditional Deathmatch and Capture the Flag modes will also be included.

Lego Harry Potter Trailer

The new Lego Harry Potter trailer has been released.  The action in this trailer all comes from the Prisoner of Azkaban section of the game.

One major thing that has been key to the success of the Lego games is the humour, and that looks to be all intact in this game.

But remember, it is time to get Sirius.

Lost Planet 2 Coming Sooner

Lost Planet 2 was originally down for a May 18th release. However, it has now been pulled forward a week, and is coming out May 11th.

If you want a code for the demo, which will be out by March 31st then keep an eye on www.lostplanet2game.com who will be giving out codes soon on a first come first served basis.

Skate 3 Demo Coming

With Skate 3 a couple of months away, there are some people that just can't wait that long to try it out.

Well, those people are in luck.

There will be a demo coming out on to XBL and PSN on April 15th.  This means you can get time to perfect your 'dark side' grinds, before the full retail game comes out.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier screenshots show weapons and gadgets

Twelve screenshots of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier have appeared on the net today, showing off some of the gadgetry and weapons that are to be included in the game. Below is a shoulder-mounted rocket launcher, 'Predator' cloak (as previously explained), and soldier on what looks like some sort of turret.
The rest can be seen over at The Lost Gamer.

Co-op DLC for Just Cause 2 is unlikely, says Avalanche

Magnus Nedfors, the game's director, has revealed that Avalanche doesn’t plan on releasing DLC that includes co-op.

Speaking in a Q&A over at Eurogamer, he said that the developers wanted it to be single-player only from the beginning, although future installments may include multiplayer.

"There is no current plan for DLC allowing co-op gameplay," he announced, "I’m sorry. We opted from the beginning to make a single-player game. Adding multiplayer would have meant limits on what we could achieve.

I personally – not the company – think single-player games are great fun and there is an audience for that. A game can be good without multiplayer support.

Somewhere in the future it would be really fun to do a Just Cause multiplayer game, and we’ve had lots of good ideas for it."

New Crackdown 2 shots show guns and flying

New screenshots of Crackdown 2 have emerged. They show a variety of new weapons and what seems to be the ability to fly

Check them out over at Gamespot.

The images for some reason are found under 'LOST PLANET 2'. But don't be fooled, they are indeed new shots of Crackdown 2.

The video below shows a new game mode called 'Rocket Tag'. Looks oh-sum!

The BAVGAs

Well, what can I say? It was a great night, and I'm glad I had the privilege of being backstage with the press. However, the night didn't start off to great, but that was my own fault, then it quickly got better and better.

I arrived at the venue around 7.15, didn't know where I was going, so I asked one of the organisers there where I needed to go, and the pointed me to the direction of a desk.  I casually and happily wandered over and said who I was, they then looked on their list and couldn't find me on it (I started getting scared) then they asked if I was a nominee or for press, so I told them I was press and was there for the media centre.  They then kindly showed me where I should have gone. Panic Over.

I went into the Media Centre (the room for all the press invited). There was only a few other people in there at this point, including MrPointyHead and SuperKaylo, which seemed quite weird to me.

I didn't really know what to do with myself, so I went and sat at a table and just started jotting down some notes in my pad.  Luckily though, after only a couple of minutes someone that I knew I could go and talk to came through the door.  It was my friends cousin, James Batchelor, who works over at MCV.

We were then joined by Iain McKenzie who works for BBC Radio 1s Newsbeat.  I'd listened to him a few times on the radio before, and it was really weird for me that he just came and sat with us.  I found out he was addicted to twitter just like me, and we started talking about everything gaming related.

While we were talking, there was a few groups setting up their cameras and equipment ready to interview the winners and celebs.

Then the awards began.

Everyone got up and surrounded the screen that was in the room to watch the awards being carried out.

The first few awards had been given out and everyone agreed with them, then the 'Use of Online' award was being announced and FIFA won, that's when there was a real state of shock in the room, with everyone asking "How the hell did that win?".

The winners then started coming into the room, as well as some of the presenters.

One thing which I quickly realised is that if you didn't apply to be filming anything and have a crew with you, it was impossible to get any type of interview or even just a photo.

Anyway, the celebs and the winners were entering the room, quickly getting moved to the interview area, each of them doing an interview for the 7 or 8 crews that were there for a couple of minutes each. While this was happening, I was just trying my best to act cool and not have a meltdown of excitement in the middle of the room, which I think I did pretty well.

Then the fellowship was announced and Shigeru Miyamoto started his acceptance speech and you could tell who was excited to see him with his speech, as when he started his speech they all got as close to the screen and speakers as they could get.

Then, unfortunately, the awards ended and everyone was wrapping up whatever it was they were getting on with.  As I found my way out there was a lot of nominees/winners/celebs hanging around in the hall way, but I carried on acting as normal as I could and left.

It was a great night, not what I was expecting it to be like, but still great, and something I won't forget about in a long time.

I feel very privileged that I got the chance to go to the event, as I didn't really think I would ever be able to get to go to anything like this.  That's why I'm going to finish this feature with a big 'thank you' to Marty, if it wasn't for him then this wouldn't have happened, so Marty, thank you.
